Music Curriculum at Castaic Middle School

Castaic Middle School offers a wide variety of choices in music education including general music, vocal music, instrumental music at all levels, beginning and intermediate guitar and a theatre/stage techniques course. We are very fortunate to have a supportive district/administration and education foundation that value the enriching benefits of Fine Arts.

Band I--Beginning Band, 7th/8th provides the students an opportunity to develop their musical skills and begins at the beginning of the school year. Students will be able to demonstrate the proper techniques of performing on an instrument, identify the 6 elements of music and be able to read music notation. Simple melodies will be rehearsed and performed. Our ultimate goal is to work towards public performance and/or gain placement in Castaic’s Adv. Band or high school music program placement. Difficult and challenging repertoire/materials will be rehearsed and performed. Basic marching skills are introduced and practiced in the third quarter. Our ultimate goal is to work towards our winter and spring public performances and/or gain placement into a high school band program (9th graders). While enrolled in Adv. Band each student is eligible to enroll in College of the Canyon’s Youth Symphony Orchestra. This course is a full year commitment. If you visited Musée du Louvre in Paris to see Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa and a fly landed on the portrait's nose, you would probably stare at the fly and not the masterpiece.
