Castaic Middle School offers a wide variety of choices in music education including general music, vocal music, instrumental music at all levels, beginning and intermediate guitar and a theatre/stage techniques course. We are very fortunate to have a supportive district/administration and education foundation that value the enriching benefits of Fine Arts.
Band I--Beginning Band, 7th/8th provides the students an opportunity to develop their musical skills and begins at the beginning of the school year. Students will be able to demonstrate the proper techniques of performing on an instrument, identify the 6 elements of music and be able to read music notation. Simple melodies will be rehearsed and performed. Our ultimate goal is to work towards public performance and/or gain placement in Castaic’s Adv. Band or high school music program placement. Band II--Advanced Band, 7th/8th provides the students an opportunity to develop their musical skills and begins at the beginning of the school year. Students will be able to demonstrate the proper techniques of performing on an instrument, identify the 6 elements of music and be able to read moderately complex music notation found in levels 1 ½ to 3 repertoire. Difficult and challenging repertoire/materials will be rehearsed and performed. Basic marching skills are introduced and practiced in the third quarter. Our ultimate goal is to work towards our winter and spring public performances and/or gain placement into a high school band program (9th graders). While enrolled in Adv. Band each student is eligible to enroll in College of the Canyon’s Youth Symphony Orchestra. This course is a full year commitment. Beginning Guitar 7/8 provides the students an opportunity to develop their musical skills by playing the guitar. Students will be able to demonstrate the proper techniques of performing on the guitar, identify the 6 elements of music, be able to read music notation and will be introduced to guitar tablature. Simple melodies and chords will be rehearsed and performed. Intermediate guitar continues where the first semester finished and introduces chord progressions and more advanced guitar techniques/studies. Thanks to Castaic’s Ed. Musical T/S Tech 7/8--is a course where the students learn what it takes to produce a musical/theatrical event. Our ultimate goal is to work towards our spring musical production and to serve the school in setting up for public events (assemblies, presentations, meetings, etc). Stage terminology, lighting and sound technology and safety, and set/prop design will be presented and utilized. The internet, movies/videos will be some of the instructional modalities used for observation/analysis/evaluation/implementation on a weekly basis. (1-2 quarters.) Mr. Wakelin No pre-requisite *currently unavailable--some basic duties will be assumed by our Exp. Mus. App. class
Exp. Music Appreciation Learn more about how the language of music affects our moods and feelings. Explore the anatomy of the voice and begin learning choral/vocal techniques Learn about the 6 elements of music, the instruments of the orchestra and explore how music has changed throughout the centuries (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classic, Romantic and Contemporary eras). 1 semester. Choir--As a before-school "club" provides the students an opportunity to develop their vocal music skills –this course is year round. Students will be able to demonstrate the proper elements of singing identify the 6 elements of music and be able to read simple music notation. Simple melodies and harmonies will be rehearsed and performed. Our ultimate goal is to work towards public performance and/or gain placement into an advanced vocal music program.
